What is tooth whitening ?

Tooth whitening is a bleaching process that removes staining and discoloration of enamel & dentin.

Tooth whitening is most effectively handled through a combination of in-office and at-home treatment. The in-office bleaching takes about an hour, depending on how responsive your teeth are to the bleach.

We offer many different whitening solutions:

Opalescence BOOST In-Office Whitening

Opalescence BOOST is a power in-office whitening. It utilizes an intensive chemical whitening process without a light, resulting in less sensitivity. This is typically completed in a one hour appointment.

Note: We recommend take home bleaching trays to be used after in-office whitening treatment for touchup & maintanance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I a candidate for whitening?

Your SmileSmart dentist will determine if you are a candidate for tooth whitening by thoroughly examining your teeth. Patients with active periodontal disease, decay (cavities), sensitive teeth, and certain health conditions are not good candidates for whitening. Certain types of stains caused by medicines such as tetracycline or necrotic pulp may not whiten as well as normal teeth.

Is whitening safe?

YES! Recent studies have shown that tooth whitening under supervision of a dentist is safe for teeth & gums. There is a risk of sensitivity of both the teeth and the gums during and following treatment. Symptoms normally disappear within a few days.

How long do results last?

Your teeth will be lighter after the bleaching. Bleaching results are stable but retaining white teeth is dependent on your lifestyle & nutrition habits. Cofee, tea, and cigarrette consumption will obviously restain your teeth over time. Bleaching may need to be repeated periodically.

For best whitening results, patients should have realistic expectations, and following the instructions for at-home bleaching touch-ups. If bleaching does not achieve the results you desire, you should discuss other forms of treatment with your dentist.

Do I Really Need a Dentist's Supervision for Whitening?

Whitening should always be done under dental supervision. Self treatment with over the counter products poses risks for teeth & gums and often do not provide desired results. In-Office whitening utilizes powerful chemicals, and a good understanding of the overall and dental health of the patient is important in implementing the process, and determining what processes are best for the patient. In addition, composite (tooth colored) fillings, crowns, and veneers will not bleach like natural teeth.

Veneers / Porcelain Veneers / No Prep veneers / Lumineers

We offer traditional veneers, porcelain veneers, no prep veneers and Lumineers.

Veneers are a conservative cosmetic treatment solution for worn out, damaged (chipped tooth), spacing in teeth, discolored teeth, slightly misaligned teeth or just for anyone who wants a new and confident smile. Veneers are designed to be natural looking and translucent. During porcelain veneer treatment,a thin layer of enamel is smoothed off the surface of the tooth, and the porcelain veneers are bonded to the teeth. In most cases, patient has little discomfort and can be done without local anesthetic. Porcelain veneers are a major tool of smile makeovers where patients can get a new smile in a few visits. They are custom-made by a ceramist to fit your smile, facial features, and are strong, durable and can resist staining.

Traditional porcelain veneers need some enamel smoothing to get a very conservative prep.

LUMINEERS are porcelain veneer that are ultra thin, made as thin as a contact lens and are placed over existing teeth, most of the time without requiring the removal of sensitive tooth structure. Risks of bulkiness / big teeth can result in some cases.

Please come in for a consult and we can determine which veneers options are for you to revitalize and change your SMILE!
